George Sorrels - the
artist
“Having been reared on the
north central plains of Texas, I have long been aware of the power
and majesty of the sky. I have watched a tornado rip through Dallas,
I have witnessed a thunderstorm where lightning walked across the
earth, and I have seen clear blue skies that go on forever.
My memories are filled with sunsets that took my breath away, with
clouds at the moment of their birth, and with terrifying wall
clouds announcing the coming of deadly storms.
The sky is a part of my religion. The first four verses of Psalm 19
clearly state what the sky is to me, although my skyscape paintings
seem rather insignificant and trivial in comparison.
Capturing the sky on canvas embodies a quest for the unattainable --
a melding of paint, craftsmenship and absolute visual concentration
to produce an unspeakable moment of visual magic, which I call
Pictura Mystica.
I hope this exhibit contains paintings that are more than mere
paint and support but are paintings in which a cloud, or a feeling
of light and air or a passage of ‘color as space’ changes
the viewer’s life in some small way.” – George Sorrels
