“In
painting, I attempt to record the common beauty of a place,
an object, or simply, a day. Aging structures and places are
transient and have their story to tell. Buildings, contraptions
and vehicles and fields that were once busy, now quiet and
at rest, are speaking to me like veterans or patriots of a
simpler time. I believe this local beauty needs voice. It
calls for our still reflection and our patient seeing.”
– William Kocher
Surprisingly,
painting with oils is a relatively recent venture for William
Kocher. It is evident his father, a graduate of Maryland Institute
of Art, influenced Kocher’s relationship with art. Over
the last couple of years, Kocher has successfully embraced
the medium, revealing its rich, brilliant color and body.
William Kocher
was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania in 1962. He moved to Cape
Cod, Massachusetts in 1993 to begin plein air painting and
study with local artists. Kocher recently returned to Pennsylvania,
continuing his study of painting at the Harrisburg Art Association,
where he met and began painting with another Lancaster Galleries
plein air painter, John David Wissler.
